You might not expect to find a green flag beach in land-locked Surrey, but there is one that you can enjoy on this walk on the banks of Frensham Great Pond. It is a busy place one hot summer days, but come out of season and you may well have it to yourself.

The Route

  1. With the snack kiosk on your left and the pond to your right, you will see a wide, sandy path bordered by vegetation heading away from you. There is a sign saying, ‘dogs this way’. Follow this path with a conservation area to your right. This will soon turn into another large sandy area. At the fence, notice where signage will direct you through the gap.

  2. Stay on the same path as you walk around the circumference of the pond. If the pond is visible to your right, then you are going the right way!

  3. Shortly before the hotel, you will need to leave the pond and walk along the lane. Veer right as you pass the hotel, keeping the water to your right. Around 50 m beyond the hotel, a footpath will appear on your right and you can leave the road again.

  4. Follow the path as it takes you around the pond and back to the car park and beach.

  • always check signage before swimming in case of outbreaks of blue-green algae

  • the area can get extremely busy on hot days, so we advise choosing a cooler day for this walk
