Views from Chalton Windmill spread as far as the sea
A gentle climb up to Windmill Hill rewards you with views across South Hampshire and The Solent as far as The Isle of Wight. The windmill is privately owned and behind a hedge, but it is an iconic landmark that makes a striking target for children to walk to.
The Route
The footpath starts just west of New Barn Farm where there is a small amount of parking at the side of the road. This is on your right just past New Barn Farm if coming from Blendworth, or on your left just before New Barn Farm if coming from the A3. The path is to the side of a large metal gate, adjacent to another large, padlocked metal gate and opposite a log across a field entrance. Go around the metal gate and follow the footpath all the way to the windmill. As you approach the top of the hill, the hedge to your left will give way to open field, providing you with far reaching views across southern Hampshire.
To the right of the windmill property you will meet a gate. Do not go through the gate, but instead turn left with the boundary hedge of the windmill on your right. The grassy path heads away from the windmill across the middle of an open field in the direction of the A3.
Go through the metal kissing gate at the opposite edge of the field and descend along a narrow path between fences. This path has an abundance of blackberries in the autumn.
The path will end with a metal gate onto New Barn Lane. Turn left and follow the quiet road up the hill and back to your car.
